Night-Import: Photography by William Lee with Edgar Lozoya
The eighth season of Formula Drift is about to begin and all you drift fans, like ourselves, are excited to see the new cars, drivers, and action.
Every year before the first round of Formula D, Universal Technical Institute holds a tech day for all the drivers to come with their cars to get inspected. As always, we always try to attend these important side events to get a glimpse at what's in store.
There are always some cars to check out that are not related to an event, and we spotted these two classics parked next to each other.
Jeff Abbott's Mazda MX-5 getting ready to roll into the tech area.
A few cars were on display, like this Veilside 350Z on Jlines. No engine yet, which is why the fronts were so high compared to the rears.
Cars getting checked.
A first look into two-time FD Champion Samuel Hübinette's Dodge Challenger.
Charles Ng's FC Rx-7, now being sponsored by Evasive Motorsports. I heard there was a LS in this car before, but not too sure about its setup for 2011. Let's just say it was loud as hell.
Next to the Rx-7 was Dean Kearney's SHR Dodge Viper SRT10 sponsored by V-Leds, also a second driver for Samuel Hübinette Racing.
On the other side was Ken Gushi's Scion tC sponsored by Scion Racing.
His usual wheel setup, Super Advan wheels.
First look into Chris Forsberg's 370Z. We were sort of confused with its suspension setup, but if its a way to win the FD, who cares!?
Some final touches.
Positive camber in the rears. It does have a purpose.
We took a step outside to check out the cars that were done with its inspection. Another look at Samuel Hübinette Racing's Dodge Challenger and Dodge Viper SRT10.
Our supporter and potential Rookie of the Year, Odi Bakchis's LS1 powered S14.
Spot our decal?
Ok, a closer look. We're hoping to have an interview with Odi before or after Formula D.
Got to give our supporter some spotlight. More photos later on.
Mike Essa made a surprising entry with his new drift car, BMW Z4. His V10 powered 335i is taking a break after the recent drift at Dubai. The build of Mike's Z4 can be found here, provided by MotoIQ.
The Enkei NT03+M's in matte black finish were looking great on the car.
Surprisingly an E46 M3 engine.
We are excited to see how well this car will perform at Formula D.
Odi's LS1 S14 again. Woot!
Odi himself and his car getting inspected.
Spotted someone who looked really familiar and found out it was John Pangilinan, the mastermind behind the new 2011 Scion tC, which will be driven by Fredric Aasbo.
Clinton Lum, the owner of LUMDIGITAL. All you models should hit this guy up. Check out his work!
Mike Essa rolling in for check up.
As mentioned previously, we spotted John Pangilinan, which meant the new 2011 Scion tC was going to show up and as expected, it was parked in front of the entrance.
We don't want to even bother typing out the whole modification list, so check it out on Import Tuner. If it shows up at Long Beach on Friday, our photographer Andy Nguyen will take some shots of it drifting.
Couple of cars getting ready to get inspected.
Kyle Mohan's Rx-8.
Wasn't too sure on who drove this S13.
and my favorite of the day, a S13.5. I'm speculating it's a new driver and car for Formula D 2011.
How often do you see a FD car on Work Schwert wheels? Wait..just Work wheels in general?
Great looking car. Excited to see this car on the track!
Back into the tech area, took a snap of Mike Essa's suspension/brake setup.
Fredric Aasbo (left) and his tC.
A new driver for 2011 Formula D, Chris Licup's SR20DET powered S14. Full feature can be found on OMGDrift.
More of Mike Essa's Z4.
Odi leaving the tech area. How's his driving? Excellent!
There were a few more cars/drivers that came in later on. We did miss Taka Aono's AE86 by Megan and Ross Petty's S15 by Boso Garage.
Some random cars we spotted walking around the lot.
An Accord rocking our supporters lug nuts, JDM Sport.
After our long drive to Rancho and checking out the FD cars, Edgar, Dino Images, and I headed down to Frys to pick up the new Need for Speed Shift 2 Unleashed!
Practice rounds of Formula D will be covered by Andy Nguyen next week so stay tuned!
